Bearded Emperor Tamarins owe their name to their impressive, ‘imperial-style’ white moustache and the white beard under their chin.

This species lives in family groups numbering about 10, usually containing just one breeding female. She lets the males know when she is receptive by means of pheromones emitted during anogenital olfactory marking, which inhibits ovulation in the group’s subordinate females.

The Bearded Emperor Tamarins’ habitat, once highly inaccessible, is increasingly affected by deforestation because of the building of roads for logging and cattle-breeding.
