These are the largest of all hornbills. 
 
They live in groups of 2–12, vigorously defending territories that can cover up to 100km2.
 
Southern Ground Hornbills nest in the cavities of large trees. Females lay 2 eggs but generally only one chick is raised. Young hornbills leave the nest at about 3 months of age. Their parents continue to guide and protect them until they are fully grown and achieve total independence at the age of 6–8 years.
