                IUCN REDLIST status

The total Great Green Macaw population is estimated to stand at less than 2,500 fully grown individuals. The main threats to this species are deforestation, the trade in their meat and the illegal trade in caged birds.

As with other parrots, their zygodactile claws (two claws facing forwards, two backwards) allow them to maintain a firm grip on branches while grabbing food.
