Lions are the only truly social cats, living in groups that generally comprise a coalition of adult males (often related), several adult females and their young. But these groups are fission/fusion societies, meaning that individuals come and go (alone or in small autonomous units), only occasionally coming back together.

Female Lions are unique among cats in that they behave cooperatively, giving birth at the same time, raising their young in communities by allowing alloparenting, and hunting as a group.

More than 10,000 years ago, Lions were widespread in Europe, Asia and Africa. Today they can only be found in Africa and north-west India, where 200 specimens survive in the Gir Reserve.
