IUCN REDLIST status
Female Goeldi’s Monkeys give birth to one young and carry them exclusively for the first 10-15 days. After this time, other members of the group can carry the baby, giving it back to its mother to be fed. The young, who grow more quickly than other members of the Callithricidae family, are weaned at around 3 months of age.
This species is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List because of its low numbers, unequal spread and habitat loss. Foraging and moving close to the ground, in extremely dense undergrowth, Goeldi’s Monkeys are hard to spot. The small isolated populations are the most fragile and that is why the species has to be protected.
