IUCN REDLIST status
Adult Scarlet Ibises are recognisable by their bright-red colour, whereas the young have a dull grey-brown plumage with a white belly. The flamboyant colouring of the adults is due to their carotenoid-rich diet.
Ibises nest in colonies. Both parents incubate, feed and protect chicks against predators. Chicks grow quickly: they fly from about 40 days of age and become completely independent after 2 and a half months.
Although it is not listed among endangered species, the Scarlet Ibis is hunted for its meat, and its feathers are used in local crafts.
