Green iguana Iguana iguana
leaves, fruit, occasional insects
tropical forests close to rivers, lakes, mangroves, swamps
Latin American, Caribbean, eastern Pacific
Despite their name, green iguanas vary widely in colour according to temperature or gender. For example, males turn orangey or golden in colour before and during courtship displays.
Tree-dwellers, iguanas are also excellent swimmers. Although they are hunted for their meat, their skin and the pet trade, they are not listed among endangered species and their numbers remain high throughout their range.
