La Palmyre Zoo celebrates 50th anniversary!

Created in June 1966, La Palmyre Zoo celebrates a big milestone this year: its 50th anniversary. A slice of life marked by the daring personality of its founder, Claude Caillé, deceased in 2011 after 45 years focused on building, developing and popularizing his institution that became one of the star attractions of Charente-Maritime and one of the most renowned zoo in France.

For this special occasion, the zoo has designed a photo exhibition featuring its extraordinary adventure. Twenty panels scattered along the paths track the significant events (i.e. the fire of 1976), the major achievements (construction of the polar bear enclosure, of the vivarium and the Great Ape Exhibit) or funny stories (the lion Sultan raised by a female dachshund called Mirza, the bottles of milk for the bear Bambino)...

Some panels contain QR Codes that, once scanned with a smartphone by using a specific application (usually downloaded for free), give access to exclusive archive videos.

We hope our visitors will enjoy to delve into the zoo history, discovering-or rediscovering earthy moments, some of which having greatly contributed to the notoriety of the park.
