A new male bison has arrived!

The zoo has just received a male bison (Bison bison) from a zoo in southern France. Born in August 2013, the bull is still young and therefore of small size compared to that of our adult female!


 
American bisons live in herds composed of females with their young or of adults of both sexes during the mating season. Mature males usually live alone or in bachelor groups.
The female gives birth to a single calf weighing between 15 and 25kg after a gestation period of 9 months. Males reach maturity around age 3, females when they are 2 to 3 years of age. So our young male will still need some time before being able to ensure offspring!
 
An additional female, coming from the same zoo, should join our pair in a few weeks.
Pending the arrival of the new mate, the introduction between the male and our female went well as shown in the video below.
